Military Connection: Nick Lachey’s “Military Connection”

Nick Lachey and the USO have joined forces with the Almay Simply American Experience, and they’re taking it on the road. The Experience bus will be packed with Almay makeup goodies while they travel cross-country to the people, places and occasions that best exemplify the American spirit. There’s even a kissing booth and makeovers! While this is a lot of fun and games, the Experience is meant to raise both awareness and funds for the USO, especially for the women of the U.S. military.

After the kickoff event in New York, the bus traveled to Charlotte, NC for Memorial Day weekend. The rest of the schedule includes stops in Nashville, TN June 11th -14th, Baltimore, MD on the 4th of July, Chicago, IL on July 11th, Kansas City, KS on July 17th-18th, Columbus, OH on August 1st – 2nd, St Paul, MN on August 29th-30th, Dallas, TX on September 26th-27th, Fort Hood, TX on September 29th, and Austin, TX on October 3rd.

In a recent interview, Lachey said, “ … always make sure to thank our service men and service women. Too many of us take for granted what they do and the sacrifices they’re making, so I always make an attempt. Any time I see someone in an airport or on the street, I’ll thank them for their service.”

Lachey is no stranger to entertaining the troops, having a number of USO show under his belt. He even entertained on an aircraft carrier in the Indian Ocean. Lachey’s wife, Vanessa Minnillo, was born at USAF Clark Regional Medical Center. Her father served in the Air Force, so patriotism comes easily to her as well.

In addition to his great work with the USO, Lachey also advocates for children and humanitarian causes through his work with organizations such as VH-1 Save The Music, Feeding America and the Make-a-Wish Foundation.  He is also founded the Nick Lachey Foundation, a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to helping children, families and communities in need throughout the United States.

Military Connection: Adaptive Sports Help Restore Warriors

On nine consecutive days, June 19th– 28th, wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans from the Army, Marines, Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard will compete will compete in the Defense Department’s Warrior Games at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. Also competing will be athletes from Special Operations Command, and a team from the British military.

As the athletes compete in track and field, shooting, swimming, cycling, archery, wheelchair basketball and sitting volleyball events, Dawn Davis will be cheering on her personal hero.

Army Staff Sgt. Cory Davis grew up in San Diego, and always wanted to work on helicopters. He enlisted in the active duty Army for nine years, took a break, and then became an avionics mechanic National Guard technician with the 1107th Theater Aviation Sustainment Maintenance Group in Springfield, Missouri. During a deployment to Afghanistan in April 2014, Davis hurt his ankle and lost control of his right arm.

His doctors thought he had injured the ulna nerve, and he was flown to Germany, and then back to the States. That’s when it became apparent that Davis had Parkinson’s disease, a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects movement.

While Davis was recovering at the Warrior Transition Unit at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, his wife, along with Army Trials athlete Sgt. 1st Class Sam Goldenstein, the adaptive sports site coordinator, encouraged Davis to give adaptive sports a try.

During the recent Army Trials, Davis got into the finals in men’s compound archery, earning a gold medal in the men’s standing rifle. Davis can also boast some of the highest shooting scores of the day.

Parkinson’s disease usually strikes those over 50, but has been known to strike in younger adults. Most famously, Michael J. Fox was diagnosed at age 30, NBA player Brian Grant was diagnosed at 36, and major league baseball player Ben Petrick was diagnosed at 22.

Dawn said, “I am filled with pride when he approaches each obstacle he faces every day. His constant attitude of not giving up makes me so very proud and happy he is not allowing a terrible disease to control his life.”

At Military Connection, we are honored to work with a number of great non-profit and for-profit companies. Many of them have one or more military Veterans at the helm. Veterans are natural leaders, with many of them having led small teams or platoons throughout their military career.  Veterans are flexible, often times having been plunged into highly unique environments requiring literal do or die-based skills training. They know how to execute plans and have the drive and desire to continue to be leaders, even after finishing military service.

Veterans learn how to be leaders early in their careers. One such Veteran is Michael Galesky, the president of Johnson Creek Enterprises. Galesky is a highly decorated military intelligence professional, retired from the U.S. Army. He was kind enough to share the following thoughts about Memorial Day with our readers:

“Memorial Day to me is a fairly solemn day and I tend to be a bit quiet on that day thinking of those who have served.  My routine that day involves a trip to the Veterans’ Cemetery in Milwaukee. I walk among the head stones and I thank each and every one of those who served to make this country a more perfect union.

My 10 years in the Army taught me so much about selfless service and sacrifice. Memorial Day is to me the epitome of remembrance of those who have served and those who serve now.  They are my brothers and my sisters, people who would put their life on the line for me and for whom I would do the same.

The sacrifices that they have and still make, humble me.  I believe that they should humble us all on any given day, but most especially on that day.  So whether you walk among the stones and thank those who have given, or raise a toast to them at your family barbecue, please remember them.”

In return for the service and sacrifices they have made for our country, the American Freedom Foundation (AFF) works tirelessly to better the lives of our veterans, service members and their families. AFF serves and supports them by creating awareness and building support for their service, sacrifice and needs through partnerships with military focused organizations.

In just over ten years, the American Freedom Foundation has made grants of approximately $1.2 million to more than 30 military organizations. The non-profit has awarded over 755 full and partial scholarships to military spouses and their dependents, in 47 states and nine countries, valued in excess of $11 million.

Additionally, through Warriors To The Workforce, the AFF national veterans employment initiative program, thousands of veterans have been connected to hundreds of participating companies for civilian employment opportunities. “Our veterans and their families need help finding jobs,” said American Freedom Foundation Co-Founder SMA Jack Tilley (retired).  “They have given so much to our country, providing opportunities for employment is one way we can give something back to them.”

On May 23rd, AFF is presenting the 6th American Freedom Festival Concert in San Diego, CA. This year, the event stars 5-time GRAMMY award winner and country music icon, Wynonna, and her band, The Big Noise. The concert, held annually aboard the historic USS MIDWAY MUSEUM, will benefit San Diego Armed Service YMCA, Wounded Warrior Support Network, ReBoot Workshops, Nice Guys Victory Fund and Support the Enlisted Project.

Over the past five years, American Freedom Festival San Diego has raised approximately $150,000 for local San Diego military charitable organizations. Military Connection: Bringing Down bin Laden

In the military, there is usually a code of conduct to keep missions secret, even when completed. As civilians, we never truly know what happens on most of these missions. But one mission that has always sparked curiosity was the one that brought us the news that Osama bin Laden was dead. Now, the former Navy SEAL who claims to have delivered the fatal blow is speaking out.

Robert O’Neill says he and his team members thought they were going on a suicide mission.

Referring to the actual compound itself, O’Neill said, “… it looked exactly like I thought it would. It was kind of surreal. It was a realization that we are never going to come home, so you might as well take in a few things and remember them and enjoy them.”

But the team would become secretly famous after that night. O’Neill said bin Laden was waiting for him after his team climbed stairs from the second floor. O’Neill recalls being behind another SEAL team member, who fired an initial shot upstairs, encountering two women as they reached the top. The first SEAL shoved them aside, presuming they were about to detonate explosives.

Standing before O’Neill was bin Laden, something he says is a moment that really stuck out.

“Seeing him standing up — being one of the few people to ever see Osama bin Laden alive. It was under night vision, so I could still see the clothes he was wearing, the cap he had on his head and his short gray beard.”

O’Neill says bin Laden said nothing before a bullet tore into his forehead. Two more shots were fired at bin Laden, a precaution to ensure the terrorist was dead.

After hearing bin Laden expel his last breath, the team put him in a body bag, dragged him downstairs and across the grounds to their helicopter. When asked who delivered the fatal shot, O’Neill said it was himself, prompting a teammate to give thanks.

U.S. special operations leaders have been critical of O’Neill for making public comments about the raid, calling them an unseemly quest for attention that is damaging to the Special Forces program.

O’Neill said he expected his decision to speak publicly about the raid, despite a code of silence among Navy SEAL special operations forces, would upset some and bring personal risk to himself. But he said he did not believe he was revealing secrets.

“Yes there’s personal risk but I’ve accepted personal risk before. It’s bigger than me. It’s not about me,” O’Neill said.

O’Neill co-founded a veterans charity, and interest in it has skyrocketed since his name became known. The nonprofit, Your Grateful Nation, is devoted to helping Special Operations troops transition out of the military. O’Neill said that veterans are more nervous about trying to find a job after they separate than they are about going into combat. Charities like Your Grateful Nation help bridge the gap for veterans who need help figuring out their next steps and how to land jobs.

The former Seal will be appearing at a charity poker tournament and private luncheon aimed at helping U.S. Special Forces Veterans in Buford, Georgia on May 2nd.

The Infinite Hero Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that funds the programs that drive innovation and accessibility of effective treatments for returning military heroes and their families.

The Infinite Hero Foundation, along with partners Team Red, White and Blue and Oakley,  is hosting a surf clinic for military Veterans in conjunction with the 2015 Oakley Lowers Pro.

Ambassadors and coaches for Oakley will join volunteers for a surfing clinic on Sunday, April 26th, from 8 am to 2 pm at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, California. The event is part of a weekend of activities tailored specifically for Veterans as part of Team RWB’s Veterans Surf Camp and Leadership Development program.

“We’re extremely thankful to Oakley and the Infinite Hero Foundation for making this camp possible,” said Andrew Hutchinson, Team RWB Director of Camps and Special Programs. “There’s something very symbolic about surfing — getting up time and again after falling — that can be carried over to life.”

Infinite Hero Foundation is deeply committed to rewarding the sacrifices and bravery of those who have risked their lives serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.  Team RWB is a well-matched collaborator, as their mission is to enrich the lives of American veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity to help with reintegration from active duty and recovery from combat wounds.

The Oakley Lowers Pro is located in a perfect surf location,  on land owned by the United States Navy, adjacent to the Marine Corps’ Camp Pendleton base.  Cuan Petersen, Oakley’s Global Sports Marketing Director, says the event gives them the chance to host some of the world’s best surfers from around the globe, while also giving back to the Veterans who selflessly protect everyone’s freedom. Added to that, the relevance of the historic location makes it a perfect fit for a great event.

Veterans participating in the Oakley surf clinic will also be invited to attend the Oakley Lowers Pro as VIP guests on Tuesday, April 28, the opening day of competition. Oakley athlete autographed surfboards will be auctioned online to raise money and awareness for Infinite Hero Foundation.

It is NOT TOO LATE to register for the Los Alamitos Race on the Base 2015, taking place at the Joint Forces Training Base Los Alamitos, CA, on Saturday, February 28, 2015.

Whether you are a serious competitor, a casual enthusiast, or still working on your New Year’s resolution, there is an event just for you.  Events include: 5K Run, 5K Walk, 10K Run/Wheelchair/Handcycle, and a Reverse Triathlon,one for individuals and one for teams. There is also a 1K mission for kids 10 and under, and a Jr. Reverse Triathlon for kids 7 to 12.

Late registration for each event can be completed online until noon on Friday, February 27th. Registration fees vary by event. All registered participants receive a free breakfast or lunch, a long-sleeve moisture wicking event T-shirt, finishing medals styled after military dog tags, and the chance to race over the perfectly flat surface of an actual runway with a terrific view of military aircraft and ground vehicles along the way.

Service members, law enforcement and fire personnel are being offered a $5.00 discount on their registration when they enter coupon code HERO2015 during online registration.

But even if you aren’t interested in participating in one of the races, the Race on the Base is still an event worth coming out for. There are opportunities to volunteer at registration tables, aid stations, and item drop-offs. You can serve as course monitors, finish line staff, or in other positions as part of the Race Crew.  All volunteers receive breakfast or lunch, snacks, a long-sleeve moisture wicking “Race Crew” T-shirt, a backpack, and access to the volunteer lounge.

The Race on the Base also offers a two-day expo, beginning on Friday and continuing through the duration of the race on Saturday. If you’re not racing or volunteering, come out as a spectator and cheer the racers on, see the military aircraft and vehicles, and enjoy the food and entertainment.

In 2000, the base opened up the airfield to the local race and Race on the Base has become a very popular regional event and great community outreach for the California National Guard. Running on the Runways at Los Al has been drawing thousands of runners and spectators ever since…..” said Lt. Colonel Tom Lasser, U.S. Army (Retired). Please note that because the event is taking place on a U.S. military base, security will be tight. All adults, including racers, volunteers and spectators, must bring a valid driver’s license, ID card or passport. There are  no RVs or pets allowed on base. Do the post-New Year’s blues have you feeling down? Are you in need of a pick-me-up? We all know that laughter is the best medicine, and the world famous Laugh Factory has been dishing out this medicine since 1979. Supply & Demand Comedy will be administering the chuckles and belly-laughs at the Laugh Factory on Sunset Blvd. for three shows this February.

Supply & Demand Comedy’s limited run will take place on February 4th, 11th, and 18th at 8:00 PM. Each show features its own array of talent and style.

The Wednesday February 4, 2015 show will feature: Steve Hofstetter (the host of Laughs on FOX), Erik Griffin (Comedy Central series “Workaholics”), Danny Jolles (popular in New York and LA), Tommy Johnagin (who is slated to have his own show on CBS), Iliza Shlesinger (the youngest person and only female to hold the title of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing”), and Michael Malone (album “Thirty One” coming out in February).

Part of having a successful career is loving what you do. Part of loving your job is finding satisfaction in the work that you do. Many Veterans, as well as civilians, are finding great satisfaction and successful careers working with Veterans. The California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) is paving the way to a career you are bound to love.

On Wednesday January 21, 2015, from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., CalVet will be hosting a job fair at their West Los Angeles Veterans Home, located at 11500 Nimitz Ave, Los Angeles, CA, 90049 (at Wilshire Blvd. and the 405 freeway).

CalVet is hosting the job fair to fill immediate openings at their West Los Angeles Veterans Home. The home is rolling it out its new Skilled Nursing Unit, and is looking for applicants to fill the following positions:

  • 27 Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs)
  • 11 Nurses
  • Activities coordinator
  • Social worker
  • Nursing supervisor
  • Clerical, food service, custodial, and numerous other clinical positions.

“We’re looking for compassionate individuals who care about our Veterans,” said Tom Bucci, the Administrator of CalVet’s West Los Angeles Veterans Home. “Our goal is filling our beds in our home, as soon as we hire the professional and caring staff we need.”

At the CalVet Job Fair in Los Angeles, applicants will have a one-stop opportunity to apply for CalVet openings. There will also be an opportunity to speak with CalVet’s human resources staff regarding how to get a state job, and how to schedule and take any necessary exams.

Any Veteran, Veteran spouse, widowed spouse, or spouse of a 100-percent disabled Veteran who achieves a passing score on an entrance examination will be eligible to apply for employment within that job classification.

CalVet has openings at all eight of their long-term care homes. On May 25, 1953, the fledgling U.S. Air Force commissioned its first official air demonstration team out of Luke Air Force Base, AZ, designated the 3600th Air Demonstration Unit. Largely influenced by the Native American culture in the area, the unit adopted the name “Thunderbirds” after the legendary supernatural birds depicted in stories and paintings found in many North American native cultures.

Over the past 61 years, the USAF Thunderbirds have been creating a legend of their own, as millions of people have witnessed their aeronautic  demonstrations. The Thunderbirds embody the pride, professionalism and dedication of American Airmen, serving around the world.

Since 1953, there have been a number of changes for the Thunderbirds. In 1956, they moved their home base to Nellis AFB near Las Vegas, NV. They have also utilized several different aircraft over the years.

In over 60 seasons of touring, millions of Americans have been wowed and awed by the USAF Thunderbirds. The pilots demonstrate amazing control over their aircraft,  evident in the precision of their maneuvers. This can only be accomplished through thorough  knowledge of their aircraft. Many of today’s military aviators credit the USAF Thunderbirds, and the shows they saw as children, as the reason why they are in their profession today.

Modern demonstrations usually consist of approximately 40 maneuvers, featuring formation flying and solo routines. The entire show, including the beginning ground ceremony, lasts about one hour. A typical air show travel season extends from March to November.

The USAF Thunderbirds have finalized their 2015 show schedule. The team is set to perform 71 demonstrations at 39 locations next year.

The Thunderbirds will perform its first public event of 2015 at the opening of Super Bowl XLIX in Phoenix, AZ on February 1st. The remainder of the schedule is as follows:

  • Feb. 22: Daytona International Speedway, Daytona Beach, FL
  • March 8: Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Las Vegas, NV
  • March 14-15: Titusville, FL
  • March 21-22:  Lancaster, CA
